Yes, if you're actually writing various combinations of JPEG options to
files on disk, then it could become tedious to compare them, true.

Please forgive me -- I know I must sound like a broken record here -- but
if you wish to get the best compression/quality tradeoffs in a very
cost-effective workflow, then have you downloaded the fully-functional
30-day trial version of Fireworks yet? It does precisely what you're
seeking, and more.
